In addition to the Swollen Shoot disease and the practice of galamsey, the ageing of plantations is also being blamed by the industry regulator.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ps-module ps-module--text\">\n  <div class=\"ps-module__body\">\n    <div class=\"ps-module__content\">\n      \n<p>In Ghana, the Cocoa Board (Cocobod) has obtained a $100 million financing facility from the World Bank. This was revealed by Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Managing Director of the regulator, speaking to the local media on 4 July. This financial support is part of a 4-year programme to renew ageing cocoa plantations. The programme targets 6 priority districts, including Assin Fosu, New Edubiase, Nkawkaw and Juaso. According to Mr Aidoo, the budget will be used to finance the felling of cocoa trees that have lived for 20 years or more, the preparation of land for new plantations and the supply of planting material. &#8220;Once a cocoa tree reaches 20 years or more, it has exceeded its lifespan, and from that point onwards, you realise that it bears no fruit, no pods, and that the flowers don&#8217;t come, and yet the farmer maintains such trees in his plantation, which is not productive&#8221;, explains the manager. According to Cocobod, the combined effect of ageing cocoa trees, the viral cocoa tree disease (Swollen Shoot) and illegal mining (galamsey) means that more than 40% of the country&#8217;s cocoa plantations, or around 500,000 hectares, are no longer productive. Last April, the regulator also announced its intention to raise $133 million to finance the regeneration of cocoa plantations affected by the Swollen Shoot.
