Like several countries on the continent, Botswana would like to get into the local production of vehicles. The government-backed project is motivated, among other things, by environmental challenges.
Botswana is looking for both local and international companies with the expertise to manufacture electric vehicles locally.
Botswana’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry has launched a call for expressions of interest which runs until May 12, which will result in the selection of a manufacturer who will produce these types of vehicles locally as well as as related components. The vehicles should be sold on the local, and regional market.
“The expression of interest aims to develop the local electromobility industry to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to Botswana’s other development goals towards the industry,” the government said in a statement. .
African states are becoming increasingly aware of the economic and environmental implications of using fossil fuel vehicles. In the current context of shortage and rising oil prices, the option for vehicle models running on cleaner fuels is essential.
Nevertheless, this jump for electromobility which is gaining ground in Africa could come up against energy challenges on the continent, in particular the weak or non-existent electricity service in several regions.
