Mixed martial arts (MMA) are increasingly popular on the African continent, in particular because of the number of African champions in the discipline. The audiovisual audience of sport in Africa is starting to attract the major MMA leagues.
The UFC, the most prestigious MMA league, has announced that it wants to organize an event on the African continent. The information was revealed on September 11 by Dana White, the president of the organization during a press conference following one of their events. Asked about the next territory that interests his organization, he explained that Africa was the place where they wanted to organize an event.
“We are talking seriously about Africa with my team. We are looking for rooms and cities there. UFC Africa is coming very soon,” Dana White explained.
On September 3, the UFC organized its first event in France and the event was a real success.
In Africa, a face-to-face UFC event is likely to be a great success, particularly because of the two African champions in the discipline, Nigerian Israel Adesanya and Cameroonian Francis Ngannou.
The success of these two athletes has allowed MMA to gain audiovisual audiences in recent years to such an extent that the rights of the UFC in the region have become a subject of competition between pay television operators. Regarding the date of the event, the UFC just specified that “it would be done very soon”.
