Present for nearly 35 years in Angola, the Altrad group is today the market leader. A status gleaned at the cost of strong competition but also a clever mix of local labor and diversification. Activities, evolution, outlook: interview with Kapussi Canungue, Managing Director of Altrad Services in Angola.

Preparation of surfaces, painting, scaffolding, insulation on one side. Inspection and decommissioning of rope access on the other. But also mechanical work. In total, there are no less than five different branches in which Altrad Services and its 1200 employees are engaged in Angola. All of these branches are based on dry land, with a head office located in the capital Luanda, and home to a large logistics facility ready to support all services provided offshore – that is, at sea.

« We work with all the operators on site, oil and gas, explains the Managing Director of Altrad Services in Angola, such as Total, Chevron, Exxon, BP, but also with the local entity: Sonangol. » No wonder, then, that Altrad Services Angola is now the market leader. But what is perhaps more so is the share of national employees. « We have a 95% local content ratio, people we’ve trained from the start. And we are now trying to “angolanize” the management. »

Competition and performance

Already rich in its five branches and its dozen different activities, the Angolan subsidiary is nevertheless seeking to diversify further. « We decided to explore mechanical services. The goal is to focus on some tank repair work at terminals and refineries» The reason ? The very strong competition present on the spot. « It gave us a hard time! »

Altrad Angola’s success has also been achieved in collaboration with what Kapussi Canungue refers to as « sister companies ». Companies that allowed them to do different jobs that they could do alone before.

« During our onshore engineering contract with Shell, we had ties with our sister company, Cape. They provided us with competent people who came to help us. It was a very big success. » A success that the Managing Director wishes to build on with the new sister company, Sparrows.

The long-term goal? « Improve our operational performance and continue to be the leader in the country. »
