To support Senegal's continued progress in the energy sector, the U.S. government is contributing $ 1.2 million to develop and expand the country's natural gas options.

The United States Agency for Trade and Development ( U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA)) has awarded a grant of $ 1.2 million for a feasibility study to develop the first major onshore gas pipeline in Senegal.

The said study will consist of defining the final route of the pipeline, finalizing the technical specifications for each segment and determining the technical requirements for the initial engineering and design phase of the project.

“This pipeline will become the backbone of Senegal’s domestic gas sector and help create the infrastructure needed to power the country’s power plants and transform its energy sector. We intend to make a significant difference in the lives of millions of Senegalese by reducing electricity production costs by up to 50%, ”said Todd Abrajano, chief operating officer at USTDA.

Senegal is set to become a major African producer of natural gas from 2023, when the giant gas field Grand Tortue Ahmeyim, straddling the maritime border with Mauritania, should be commissioned.
